The inaugural issue, That Obscure Object, features essays by Anne Boyer (author of Garments Against Women, among others) and Juliet Jacques (author of Trans: A Memoir), a new short story by writer and translator Saskia Vogel, and poetry by Eileen Myles (author of Chelsea Girls and twenty other books).
The issue explores a range of ideas, from impossible love objects and the obsession with 'epic crushes' ('The One and Only' by Anne Boyer) to the development of trans writing as a distinct genre ('Écriture trans-féminine?' by Juliet Jacques).
Mal is supported by Feeld and operates with full editorial independence and without ads. It will be published quarterly, with an annual print edition serving as an anthology.
Mal's launch will take place on Tuesday 13 November, from 6.30pm at the Institute of Contemporary Art and will include readings by Anne Boyer, Juliet Jacques, Saskia Vogel and poet Hannah Sullivan, followed by a drinks reception at the Rochelle Canteen ICA bar.
