When did tumblr become the next great porn site?

Mainstream porn is usually characterized by a few common threads—it’s mostly heteronormative content hosted on seedy sites, and it’s often very profitable. This porn complex, though widespread and accessible, has now met an unlikely match—Tumblr.

While Tumblr would rather not be seen as a porn hub, its lax content restrictions has turned it into a site of unfiltered adult content in both written and visual formats. A place where niche communities can thrive due to a lack of censorship placed on the types of content they like to share.

As a result, Tumblr is the place people visit when in search of better porn. And by “better” I mean porn that is political, feminist, queer, sex-positive and empowering.

Why Tumblr?

As mentioned before, Tumblr, as a blogging site, has different content restrictions compared to say, Twitter or Instagram. And because of this difference, Tumblr has become an active and community-driven place where people search for and post porn they want to see. Its porn blogs are crafted and curated based on either the author’s preferences or the audience’s, which creates the perfect recipe for niches to grow. If you have a specific kink or taste in something, there’s a Tumblr blog for that.

Another reason Tumblr has evolved into the place to visit is because of our favorite word—consent. As we’re all well aware, consent and the treatment of women in the porn industry has always been up for debate. Where Tumblr sits in this discussion is different because its adult community is made up of people who publish their own content. Some blogs are run by people photographing and filming themselves, while others feature reblogged anonymous posts found on other Tumblr sites.

With Tumblr, if you want to get naked and post, you can: you aren’t under contract, and all shapes, sizes and genders are invited to celebrate their bodies. In other words, it’s created by people for the people. It’s not created by the porn industry for a market that they think they know. For example, while Tumblr doesn’t release specific statistics, one Tumblr blogger said she receives 4,000 new followers per month, who are mostly women in their twenties.

Niche Communities on Tumblr

If you have a sexual kink or fantasy or are even curious about your sexuality, there’s probably a Tumblr blog out there that explores it and a Tumblr hashtag that matches. Here’s a short list of some niche communities and their Tumblr sites. (Keep in mind, this is just one microcosm of what’s out there, and they are NSFW.)
