After a sold out launch at the ICA, Mal partnered with Barbican Centre for a joint event at the Modern Couples Exhibition on Friday 18 January 2019. To mark Mal's upcoming second issue, writer couples and members of the Octavia Poetry Collective read their work in different rooms of the exhibition showcasing some of the most influential couples in history.
The readers included poets and writers Eley Williams and Nell Stevens, Kathryn Maris and Maurice Riordan and Octavia members Rachel Long, Victoria Adukwei Bulley, Momtaza Mehri and Belinda Zhawi.

Inspired by the exhibition and the specific backdrops selected for the event, writers read pieces, especially written for this event, as well as previously published work, reflecting on their relationships with lovers, families, friends and some of the artists from the Modern Couples show. The event was followed by a drinks reception at the Barbican's Martini Bar.
Mal's Issue 2: Made in Heaven features new writing by Sheila Heti, Mary Ruefle, Gabrielle Bellot and Fiona Duncan, and will be available online soon.
