Current Job Openings at AFM

We are currently looking to hire two part-time contract positions at AFM: Managing Editor and Associate & Social Editor.
Managing Editor
AFM is looking for a managing editor to join our team on an ongoing part-time contract basis, beginning with the production of our third issue. This is a fully remote job with a flexible approach to hours. We estimate 25 hours a week will be the standard time commitment, and will work with the right candidate to establish a schedule that works best for the right candidate.
The managing editor will work closely with the creative producer and the editors of AFM throughout the process of producing an issue, from start to finish. This position is ideal for a candidate who has previously worked in magazine publishing and is looking for the opportunity to develop and establish the production schedule, cadence, and workflow for a small but growing annual magazine.
We’re looking for someone who, first and foremost, loves magazines; a love for reading, writing, art and culture is also a necessity. The managing editor will be someone with precise attention to detail, well-established organizational skills, who thrives working both independently and as part of a group. We expect a high level of proficiency with tools such as Google Docs and Microsoft Office, particularly to assist with, develop, and maintain content calendars in shared spreadsheets.
Duties will include:
- Working with the AFM and Feeld teams on all workflow needs, such as developing production calendar schedules, setting and enforcing deadlines, and maintaining clear communication with all parties to ensure timely delivery of all work.
- Working with the creative producer and creative director to prepare, organize, and facilitate original or licensed photography needs as required.
- Working with the editors, creative producer, art & design director, and Feeld team to manage the production of all related promotional materials for the issue (such as ad trades, merchandise, event invitations, etc.)
- Managing the associate editor as they assist with the organization, formatting, and preparation of all written and visual content for print and digital layout.
- Developing and expanding our circulation and distribution channels, such as maintaining correspondence with our existing distributors, stockists and ad partners, as well as looking for opportunities to continue to grow our print reach, both on newsstands and elsewhere (such as applications to book/zine fairs, for example).
- Managing the analytics and reporting of our print and digital reach on a monthly basis.
The expected continuous communications commitment will be:
- Timely responses to emails, Slack messages, and Asana tasks from the AFM and Feeld team members.
- Correspondence with issue contributors.
- Correspondence with freelancers and contractors for assigned work (i.e. photographers, illustrators, contract editors, etc.)
The expected time commitment during the production timeline will be:
- Attending two editorial team meetings a week (approx. 1 hour each) during production (between mid-March and July).
- Attending additional meetings specific to issue content as required during production and launch.
Outside of meetings, the schedule is flexible to your needs and time zone. Deadlines are set according to a production timeline determined at the beginning of issue production, and it will be the responsibility of the managing editor to meet their assigned deadlines, hold others to deadlines, and be clearly communicating their progress or requests for assistance as required.
As the issue comes to a close, the hourly commitment may increase as necessary. The managing editor will be given notice for the weeks expected to require additional work, and their schedule will be adjusted after close to account for the extra hours.
Applicants should have:
- Minimum three years of editorial or publishing experience in print or digital media.
- Editing, copyediting and proofreading skills.
- Excellent written communication.
- Experience taking pieces from pitch stage all the way to publication.
- Familiarity working with a CMS (ideally Storyblok).
- An affinity for AFM and its vision.
Preference will be given to candidates:
- Who are either in GMT or EST timezones.
- Have previous experience working in a management capacity.
